Nuytsia Residence

Located on a narrow block approximately 8m wide by 30m long, this empty block faced a beautiful park to the West, and a laneway for vehicular access to the East. Being quite narrow and long, there were contextual issues that compromised the quality of the spaces within. The result was two seperate “pavilions” connected via a bridge on the first level. Maximising the internal courtyard, each bedroom and living space had access to windows on either side of the room. This allowed good natural ventilation and plenty of natural light.

The second design intention was to create a third “loft” level. The seperate pavillions gave opportunity to have two floor heights, essentially keeping the three level pavilion within the restricted height limit. By creating a third floor, we gave the clients an opportunity to take full advantage of the view at tree level towards the park.
